Senior/staff eng/serial co-founder offering free reviews/tips/direction/assistance. Help scratch my itch please.

Hello! Throwaway for a myriad of reasons.

I’m a senior/staff dev that currently has way too much time on their hands. I’m used to spending most of my day writing code/reviewing code/architecting – it’s what makes me tick. Right now, though, I’m finding myself with nothing to do, and it's going to be like this for a bit. To fill this void, I’d normally have a plethora of side projects, however due to some existing circumstances, doing so isn't an option.

Previously I worked for one of the larger Ruby/Rails shops that was just valued more than $3BB as one of the lead engineers. Before that I was the lead at a smaller startup, and prior to that I worked my way to becoming the CTO at a YCombinator startup. During my traditional employment I had a pretty large consumer service that has since sailed into the sunset. I have commits to Rails, one of my many gems recently was featured in the Rails community, and one of my other projects was too.

If you’re building something people want as a product/company and want advice/review/direction/architecture advice, if you’re trying to level up from the usual Rails guides, if you have some code you want reviewed, I’d love to help you out of the kindness of my heart (and out of sheer boredom, honestly.)

See, I don’t have a job right now, and I probably won’t for a bit. But I have an itch I need to scratch, and hopefully you can lend me a hand in doing so. If you have a commercial itch you need to scratch, maybe something makes sense still. 🙂

I’m in the US, central time, and have a wide open schedule. I’d like to fill it, because I’m frankly going crazy. I can’t help you with your advanced webpack build or your screwy front-end situation or anything that involves microservices; what I can help with is the rest: any Ruby, and Railsisms, scaling, any business/branding/marketing problems/fears you may be having. I’m a serial founder with a practical street MBA. I just code well enough to convince people to hire me, I guess.

Send me an email if you’d like to chat more. I'm not trying to sell anyone on anything, just want some IRL karma and to have an impact on a greater good. Tell me what you’re working on, what you could use help with, and where you want to go: [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]). If we click, maybe you'll invite me into your Slack someday.

  1. This is awesome to hear actually! bc this is what it’s really about – community and helping each other, bc its so easy to get bogged down into the little nuances of all things programming related to the point where communication can be at a minimum.

  2. Are you on gardening leave at the moment?

I’m currently a senior developer right now and I’m finding it a bit hard to make the jump into a lead role. What would you say are some of the things you would recommend doing to get to the next stage?

Aside, I’ve tried the startup route and it was quite messy getting the businessy cofounders to appreciate/value the technical process needed to bring a product to fruition.
