Good afternoon,
Could I please encourage you not to troll people asking for help, django is really not easy to learn, so people come here asking for help. The problem is, that downvoting posts because you think the question is beneath you is really not a nice thing to do when someone is already stuck on a complex problem. You had to learn at some point and most likely came either here or to stackexchange to get some answers. This subreddit has become a very unpleasant place to be of late when it used to be an excellent resource, it use to be stack exchange that was known for nasty comments, but now it's reddit. There are plenty of places to leave shitty comments if you are in a bad mood and want to take it out on someone, but please, if you don't want to help, then just move on, don't leave unhelpful comments like "read the docs" or "do the tutorial", and don't downvote, just move on, everyone needs help sometimes.
It’s OK to downvote questions where the other person is clearly not interested in providing information or even learning and just wants a quick and easy solution. “Read the docs” and “Do the tutorial” are valid responses in certain situations since those explain the concept really well, much better than someone could in a random reddit comment.
Also, did you seriously create an account just to post this?
I agree that this sub is getting nastier, which is bad, but the people looking for help are becoming lazier too. I would have no problem answering to a newbie question if it’s clear the dude asking did some research and genuinely couldn’t find anything or didn’t understand it.
For the record, I’ve never trolled anyone for being lazy questions here, but I’ve seen people do it. And honestly, in most cases the question is a duplicate (like the FBV vs CBV question that’s asked here on a weekly basis) or other things that are a Google search away. It’s never okay to be an asshole to these people, but it is okay to point out that could’ve just searched it in Google. Some people just expect the answer to find them instead of looking for it.
I totally agree. The sub is becoming as toxic as the Python sub where everybody thinks he is an expert with no time for “silly” questions.
I totally agree with you. There are a few bad apples here who have been consistently rude and it just annoys me to no end. Like, what’s the point of hanging out in a help forum if you don’t like helping newbies?
If you’re in a forum for learning, you need to accept you’re going to see questions that are asked over and over again by newcomers because they haven’t developed the skills necessary to find advice online. Honestly that can be difficult even for experienced developers to find information that’s up-to-date, since technology can go out of date.
You’re going to need to accept newbies haven’t developed the skills necessary to ask questions that more experienced developers can answer, or explain what they’ve tried. They’re newbies, after all.
At the very least… just ignore the question, and don’t be an asshole?
Some people really just need to learn a bit of empathy. I can’t imagine what they’re like to work with, and I feel sorry for any juniors who had the unfortunate luck of ending up in their team.
Thanks for this post. I am really new and obviously before I post a question I always try to solve the issue myself. I refer here for guidance however, I refrain because at times I get responses that are similar to the ones most people would get from Stackoverflow.
If we could get some moderation in this sub that would help. Too many low effort posts and admittedly, answers as well.
This is very helpful reminder. I must say I actually prefer posting for help here than in stackoverflow and haven’t had any issues myself with rude or condescending answers.
One practise I try to make a habit of is buying some coins and giving helpful people a reward. I do think that people taking time out of their day to help a complete stranger is worthy of some kind of remuneration, or reward.
Thanks (mostly) everyone on this forum for being so helpful
Well. The reason people use this is because the dudes at Stackoverflow are pathetic. They completely discourage beginners to a point that it actually feels like bullying. If you don’t like a post just ignore it, don’t troll guys.
